After reading this definition twice, I thought how many workplaces in Australia actually practice this in the sense of their recruitment policies, day to day practices and promotion programs. Many try, however few succeed. Lets take a step back and look at our own Australia culture as a starting point.
Culture of Australia
The culture of Australia is a unique mix of the traditional and the modern. With influences from its Indigenous people, as well as from its colonial past. This has created a vibrant and diverse culture that is often seen as a source of national pride. However, there are a number of issues that Australians face in terms of their culture. One of the most pressing issues is the lack of recognition of Indigenous culture. Despite the fact that Indigenous people have been living in Australia for thousands of years, their culture is often overlooked or ignored. This is particularly true in terms of the education system, where Indigenous culture is often not included in the curriculum.
This then flows into the workplace culture as to how to recruit, manage and if necessary discipline indigenous employees. This lack of understanding also effects many of the other various nationalities in the workplace. Issues we see around sex discrimination as to the role of females in the workplace. As to dismissals, what may be a dismissal in one cultural setting would not be a dismissal in another.
Lack of recognition
This lack of recognition has led to a feeling of disconnection and alienation among Indigenous people. As well as a lack of understanding among non-Indigenous Australians. This diversity in the workplace is also seen which disturbs the employees. However, at the workplace the employees’ rights are essential to be shared. The environment must not be affected because of the cultural diversity (or lack of) in the workplace.
Another issue is the lack of cultural diversity in Australia. Despite the fact that Australia is a multicultural nation, many people feel that the culture is dominated by the Anglo-Saxon majority. Due to this dominancy that people residing in Australia face also have to experience it at the workplace. This can lead to a feeling of exclusion among people from other cultural backgrounds. As well as a lack of understanding of different cultures. Many workplaces gravitate towards their own nationalities who they feel more comfortable with.
Finally, there is the issue of racism and discrimination. These issues are also witnessed at the workplaces when the employees complain. Despite the fact that Australia is a multicultural nation, racism and discrimination still exist in many areas of society. This can lead to a feeling of alienation and exclusion among people from different cultural backgrounds. As well as a lack of understanding of different cultures. There is no law that says that employees have to like each other. What the laws state is you cannot treat an employee differently or less favorably.
